The term “zika virus” is an infection caused by the bite of a mosquito. However not the malaria carrying anopheles gambiae mosquito, but by the aedes species of mosquito (aedes aegypti, and aedes albopictus). The thought of it has left many confused. Here are some facts you need to know about zika virus.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys through a network that monitored yellow fever. It was later identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Outbreaks of Zika virus disease have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

Zika is a mild illness. It feels like having flu. You may get a mild fever, and a rash. You may also have red eyes, and muscle pain..

If you come down with zika virus, take a mild pain killer. Rest and drink plenty of clean, safe water. Your illness may last 2-7 days.

However, if you are pregnant and become sick with zika, it may harm your baby. Many children born by women who had zika virus during pregnancy are born with some problems. The most common congenital condition being microcephaly. Microcephaly is a condition where a baby’s head is much smaller than expected, when compared to other children of the same age and height.


By having protected sex since zika virus can be transmitted through sexual inter course.

Try not to get bitten by mosquitoes.
Clear your environment of waste bins and small pools of water, that might breed mosquitoes.

Wear clothes that cover your skin..Mosquitoes are attracted to dark coloured clothes, try putting on light coloured clothes.

Use mosquito repellent creams during the day because unlike anopheles mosquitoes that are more active at night, zika carrying mosquitoes are more active at day.

Use mosquito treated nets.
