WHAT IS YOGA

By Unknown - June 08, 2017

It might seem like a modern trend, but yoga actually started more than 3000 years ago in India. The word "YOGA” is Sanskrit (one of the ancient languages of the East )..It means to "yoke," or unite, the mind body and spirit.

Physical or mental exercises are designed to help achieve this goal, also called self-transcendence or enlightenment.. On the physical level, yoga postures called asanas are designed to tone, strengthen, and align the body. The postures are performed to make the spine supple and healthy and to promote blood flow to all the tissues, organs and glands, keeping all the bodily systems healthy.

On mental level, yoga uses breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dyana) to quiet, clarify and discipline the mind. However experts point out that yoga is not a religion, but a way of living with health and peace of mind as it aims.

Yoga has been used to alleviate problems associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, magraine  headaches, asthma, shallow breathing, backaches, menopause, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, varicose veins, carpal tunnel syndrome and many other chronic illness. It has been studied and approved for its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Yoga can also provide the same benefits as any well- designed exercise programs, increasing general health and stamina, reducing stress and improving those conditions brought about by sedentary lifestyles.
